Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy in Edinburgh and Online

Earlier experiences — including experiences that are not often described as "trauma" — can continue to shape how the present is felt. Trauma-informed psychotherapy is a careful way of working that takes this seriously without reducing everything you are to something that happened.

What we may consider

  • The continuing effects of difficult earlier experiences.
  • Early relational experiences and how they influence present-day relationships.
  • Shame and self-worth — the internal commentary that follows you around.
  • Strong or unpredictable emotional responses.
  • Trust — in yourself, in others, in being cared about.
  • Relationship patterns that continue to appear.
  • Feeling hyper-alert, or emotionally shut down, in ways that are difficult to explain.
  • How the past may continue to shape present experience — sometimes quietly, sometimes not.

How this work proceeds

Trauma-informed practice is careful about pace. It does not assume that revisiting difficult material quickly is the same as working through it. Much of what is useful happens through the relationship itself, through developing a clearer sense of what you are experiencing now, and through understanding how earlier experiences continue to shape the present.

Not all distress is caused by trauma, and understanding earlier experiences does not, on its own, resolve them. This is careful, integrative psychotherapy that takes earlier experiences seriously without promising a fixed outcome.

Practical

Sessions are 50 minutes. In-person at Edinburgh Therapy Centre in Leith, or online for adults in the UK. Fees from £70. The fee is agreed clearly before your first session.

You do not need to have everything worked out before getting in touch.
