Starting therapy
Beginning therapy can feel like a significant decision.
An initial session provides an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to therapy, ask questions and consider whether working together feels appropriate.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can enquire directly. Psychotherapy in private practice does not require a GP referral.
Do I need a diagnosis or to know exactly what is wrong?
No. Many people begin therapy without a clearly defined difficulty. It is often useful to start with what feels most present and let understanding develop from there.
How do I make an enquiry?
The simplest way is through the enquiry form on the Contact page. You can also email h.edwardstherapy@gmail.com directly.
What information should I share?
Just enough for me to understand the nature of your enquiry: your name, an email address to reply to, whether you would prefer to meet in Edinburgh, online or either, and a short message if you would like to add context. You do not need to include a detailed history at this stage.
What happens after I enquire?
I will reply by email to discuss availability and whether arranging an initial session appears appropriate. If it does, we will agree a time and any practical details before the first session.
What happens in the initial session?
The initial session is a full 50-minute meeting. It is an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to therapy, ask any questions you have, and experience how it feels to work together. You are not committing to ongoing therapy by attending.
Is the initial session free?
No. The initial session is a paid therapeutic meeting. Fees start from £70 for a 50-minute session and are agreed clearly before you attend.
How often might we meet?
Sessions are usually held weekly at an agreed regular time. Frequency is something we discuss together.
How long might psychotherapy continue?
There is no fixed length. Some people find shorter pieces of work useful; others engage in longer-term therapy. We will review the work together over time and consider how to end well when the time comes.
How are fees agreed?
The fee is agreed clearly before your first session, so there are no surprises.
Can I meet online?
Yes. Online sessions are available to adults based in the UK. Please let me know in advance if you expect to attend while abroad. Read more on the Online psychotherapy page.
Where are in-person sessions held?
In Leith, at Edinburgh Therapy Centre, 19–21 Queen Charlotte Street, EH6 6BA.
What happens if I am not the right therapist?
It is important that psychotherapy feels appropriate for you. If, after the initial session, either of us feels that another therapist would be a better fit, I will say so and can suggest sensible next steps.
Is this an emergency service?
This is not an emergency service. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999 or attend A&E. In the UK you can also call the Samaritans on 116 123 at any time.
You do not need to have everything worked out before getting in touch.
A brief enquiry is enough to begin. You can share what has brought you here, ask a question and find out whether an initial session may be appropriate.
