What I help with

Psychotherapy for Burnout, Career Change and Life Transitions

Sometimes what looks like a career problem or a productivity problem is something more personal — exhaustion that has accumulated over years, a sense that a life that was supposed to feel meaningful no longer does, or a question about who you are becoming. This is psychotherapy for those questions, not coaching.

What we may work with

  • Burnout, emotional exhaustion and the feeling that you have been running on empty.
  • Work pressure, responsibility and the difficulty of stepping back.
  • Professional identity — who you are when the role changes.
  • Ambition, and its more complicated undersides.
  • Redundancy, career change and the meanings you attach to them.
  • Retirement and the loss of structure, purpose or status.
  • Parenthood and other substantial changes in role.
  • Relocation and the disorientation that can follow.
  • Relationship changes prompted by, or overlapping with, other transitions.
  • Loss of meaning, direction or interest.
  • The tension between external achievement and internal uncertainty.
  • The limitations of problem-solving and self-discipline for problems that are not really practical problems.
  • Feeling trapped by a life that appears successful.
  • The emotional consequences of major change, welcome or otherwise.

What this is not

This is not career strategy, performance coaching or business consultancy. It is psychotherapy, which is a different kind of work. It does not aim to make you more productive; it aims to help you understand what you are experiencing and how you want to respond to it.

Practical

Sessions are 50 minutes. In-person at Edinburgh Therapy Centre in Leith, or online for adults in the UK. Fees from £70. The fee is agreed clearly before your first session.

You do not need to have everything worked out before getting in touch.

A brief enquiry is enough to begin. You can share what has brought you here, ask a question and find out whether an initial session may be appropriate.
